Dr Duncan Ojwang sworn in as new IPOA chairperson

Dr. Duncan Ojwang Oburu has taken up the position of the fourth Chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) on August 31, 2026. This appointment came after his approval by Parliament, following President William Ruto's appointment. The new Chairperson assumed office during a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice Martha Koome at the Supreme Court, where his oath of office was administered by Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Winfridah Mokaya.

Chief Justice Koome urged Dr. Ojwang to take on his responsibilities with independence, courage, and impartiality, while emphasizing the importance of upholding the Constitution, professional conduct, and the rights of Kenyans. She challenged him to ensure that the National Police Service operates effectively, lawfully, and respects human dignity and rights.

Ojwang's six-year term as IPOA Chairperson begins amidst preparations for the 2027 General Election, with a renewed focus on police accountability, crowd management, human rights protection, and complaint handling. Prior to his appointment, he served in academia, including as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi and Dean and Senior Lecturer at Africa Nazarene University.
