Dismissing royal pardon powers undermines Federal Constitution, says Puteri Umno chief

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — Puteri Umno chief Datuk Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi warned that questioning or revoking the royal authority to grant pardons directly threatened the integrity of the Federal Constitution. During her opening remarks at the Puteri Umno General Assembly, held alongside the 2026 Umno General Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, Amal emphasized the royal institution's critical role in national sovereignty.

"Article 42 of the Federal Constitution grants the power of pardon to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, State Rulers, and Governors — challenging or revoking this power directly undermines the Constitution itself," she stated. Amal stressed that respecting the Royal Institution and safeguarding the Constitution must transcend partisan politics.

"Governments and political tides may change, but the authority of the Monarchy and the Constitution must remain protected," she advised. Emphasizing that political differences or interests are not an excuse to weaken the royal institution's authority, Amal urged unity among all attendees. The Puteri Umno General Assembly also welcomed delegates from Singapore, Japan, and the United Kingdom, along with representatives from Ameerah Malaysia and PAS’ young women’s wing.

Observing its 25th anniversary, the assembly underscored the importance of preserving the constitutional balance amidst evolving political landscapes.
