Detroit mayor announces 7 new after-school program sites with $2.2 million in city funds

Mayor Mary Sheffield announced the opening of seven new after-school program sites across Detroit this school year, using $2.2 million in city funding, according to wire material. The initiative, led by Sheffield, aims to improve life for the city's youth by expanding the existing after-school program, Get On And Learn, or GOAL Line Detroit.

The funding will enable GOAL Line to serve more students and provide transportation for K-8 students from city schools to the new sites. Currently, the program has 33 sites and serves more than 2,700 students, with the expansion expected to serve around 1,000 additional children. This is the first time the program will have sites in all seven City Council districts.

The program's executive director, Ricky Fountain, emphasized that parents can now finish their workdays knowing their children are safe and engaged. The Community Education Commission, responsible for the program, also noted that parents can better manage their work schedules due to the program. Testimonials from parents, such as Sloan Gibson, highlighted the positive impact on their children's academic performance and their own work-life balance.

The new sites will be located at various community centers, libraries, and schools throughout Detroit, with transportation provided to ensure accessibility for all students.
