Considering an iPhone Duo? Here’s what having a foldable phone is really like

For those considering purchasing an iPhone Duo, a foldable phone is an experience worth exploring. The device, set to launch on October 23 for $1,999, resembles a passport when unfolded and reveals a large inner display reminiscent of a small tablet. While numerous foldable phones have emerged in recent years, Apple claims its design surpasses its Android competitors. After using various foldables over the years, I can offer some insights into what daily life with the Duo entails.

Video is the most compelling feature of the iPhone Duo. Apple emphasizes versatility, allowing users to run two apps side by side, prop the phone up for a tent-like display, and capture selfies using the superior outer cameras. These features are enjoyable, but video stands out as the most compelling use case. The Duo's split-screen functionality, coupled with its larger-than-average inner screen, enhances video viewing.

Split-screen is also beneficial for watching videos, as it provides a decent-sized view while allowing you to read or check emails.

The second-best use case is for general enjoyment. A foldable phone offers a more comfortable grip than a traditional phone, making it easier to hold with both hands and providing more space for reading, typing, and gaming. Reading e-books on a foldable phone feels more pleasant than squinting at a phone screen. While the Duo's split-screen format isn't ideal for reading, it offers a unique experience that evokes the feeling of using a small tablet.

Using a foldable phone with one hand presents challenges. The Duo's proportions, similar to Samsung's Fold8, are more pocket-friendly, and the inner screen's layout lends itself better to video content. However, one-handed use remains a compromise. Thumbs must stretch across the screen to access menu items, which can be awkward, especially for those with smaller hands.

Apple attempts to mitigate this issue with software optimizations, placing menu items along the side of the screen. Nevertheless, users will likely experience some difficulty and may need to reach across their body to access certain functions.

A common misconception about foldable phones is the ability to fold them into separate pages, akin to a physical book. While this is technically possible on the Duo, it is less enjoyable than using a dedicated e-reader or a single, full-screen display. The inner screen's dimensions are comparable to a regular phone, resulting in cramped pages that are not as enjoyable to read as on a dedicated e-reader or physical book. For most users, reverting to a single, full-screen display will likely be the preferred option.

Touch ID is retained on the Duo, allowing users to unlock the phone using their fingerprint. The fingerprint reader is located on the power button, which can be difficult to reach initially but becomes second nature with practice. Resting the thumb on the power button while the phone is in your pocket becomes a useful muscle memory trick. Additionally, the Duo's outer display can be used to preview yourself while taking selfies with the rear camera, although this method can be somewhat awkward.
