Como ease past Leipzig in dream Champions League debut

Como achieved an impressive 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig in their inaugural Champions League match at Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia. Goals were scored in the opening half by Martin Baturina and Tasos Douvikas, putting the debutantes ahead 2-0. Assane Diao and Maximo Perrone extended the lead after halftime, marking a historic night for the Italian club on the shores of Lake Como.

In the first minute, Baturina gave Como the lead, only for Leipzig's Ridle Baku to fail in clearing a subsequent attempt by Douvikas, who eventually scored the Serie A side's first-ever continental goal in the 38th minute. Cesc Fabregas' side maintained their momentum in the second half, with Diao and Perrone adding to the scoreline.

Leipzig managed to reduce the gap to one goal with Andrija Maksimovic's effort, but Perrone secured the victory for Como in the 90th minute. This triumph marked a remarkable rise for Como, who had waited 119 years to play their first European game. The club, facing two bankruptcies in the past two decades, finally secured a place in Serie A in 2024 after three promotions in six seasons.

The upcoming fixture against Feyenoord in their European debut is set for 14 October, while Leipzig will host PSV Eindhoven the day before.
