Colombia’s Wildfires Are Leaving Wildlife Injured, Displaced and Without Habitat

Colombia's 2026 wildfire season has ravaged more than 31,000 hectares of vegetation in Tolima and an estimated 22,000 hectares in national park areas. The fires have left many injured or displaced wildlife, as well as severely damaging their habitats. Rescue efforts have focused on treating opossums, anteaters, iguanas, small mammals, birds, and other creatures, but the true extent of the damage remains unclear because fires also destroy nests, shelters, and food sources.

In Tolima, 37 animals have been treated by Aug. 26, with nine dying and 22 still in wildlife care. Cundinamarca treated 14 animals, with 11 dying and one in specialized care. The story highlights the vulnerability of smaller animals like snakes, turtles, and amphibians, which often go unnoticed. One opossum rescued after a fire in Tolima required extensive treatment, while yaguarundi cubs in Huila suffered dehydration and burns.

A puma cub in Arauca was rescued from flames and is being rehabilitated for eventual release. The fires have caused immediate injuries, dehydration, smoke inhalation, and significant habitat loss, with ecosystems estimated to take at least two years to recover. Colombia's decentralized environmental system, created by the 1993 environmental law, involves multiple regional authorities responsible for wildlife rescues based on geographic, biogeographic, and hydrographic criteria.

While rescue efforts are crucial, the long-term challenge is ensuring that sufficient habitat remains for rehabilitated wildlife to survive and thrive.
