Chwele Market Mourns Four Traders Killed in Mai Mahiu Accident

CHWELE, BUNGOMA — Four traders from Chwele Market in Bungoma County perished in a devastating road accident in Mai Mahiu, accompanied by five others who suffered injuries and are currently undergoing medical treatment. The deceased, identified as Mercyline Wefwafwa, Centrine Juma, Jane Baraza, and Anthony, were integral members of Chwele’s tomato trading community.

They were en route to Karatina to gather essential goods when the calamity struck. The tragic event has left the Chwele business community and Bungoma County in profound sorrow, with families, friends, and colleagues grappling with the loss of industrious individuals committed to their respective trades and households. President William Ruto extended his sympathies to the bereaved families, hoping the injured would recover swiftly.

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka pledged the county government’s support to the affected families. Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga facilitated transportation for families to bring their loved ones back home, with area Member of the County Assembly Hon. Eric Wekesa accompanying the group. The incident has reignited discussions surrounding road safety and the perils faced by traders, travelers, and families on Kenyan roads daily.

It has also prompted calls for enhanced road infrastructure, responsible driving practices, and improved emergency response systems. As the community mourns, sentiments have been extended to those affected, urging prayers, financial aid, and emotional support. The community has also been encouraged to disseminate verified information only to prevent the spread of misinformation that could further exacerbate the grief of those impacted.
