Can’t intercept the missiles? Hit the factories—Ukraine’s other way to stop Russia’s ballistic missiles

Ukraine faces a dire situation as it runs out of its most effective defense against Russian ballistic missiles. With no replacement in sight, the country is turning to cheaper homemade interceptors and a novel strategy of targeting Russian missile manufacturing facilities before the missiles even take flight. Russia has been busy rebuilding its arsenal of ballistic missiles, specifically targeting cities and the power grid, making the race for affordable defenses crucial in determining survival rates during another winter of strikes.

Ukraine's homegrown solution involves the Freyja project, a collaboration between Ukrainian firm Fire Point and 12 European defense companies, aiming to produce interceptors costing around $700,000 - a fraction of the $7 million price tag for the export Patriot round. In addition to this, Ukraine is planning to deploy its own Sapsan and FP-series missiles in the coming months.

However, the biggest challenge lies in countering Russia's mobile launchers. Despite facing a deluge of Russian drones and ballistic missiles, Ukraine's air defenses have intercepted only one ballistic missile out of 1,000 fired in the first eight days of August. The PAC-3 interceptor, known for its reliability, is nearly depleted, leaving Ukraine with limited options.

With US Patriot missiles arriving too late for winter, Ukraine is forced to explore alternative measures, such as striking Russian missile factories and launchers in a desperate bid to protect its citizens from the relentless onslaught.
