Blue-State Hospitals Are Folding on Trans Youth Care. Parents Are Wondering Why They Moved.

The Mount Sinai hospital system in New York, which handles about 6 million outpatient visits annually, recently settled with the Department of Justice to halt providing gender-affirming care to trans youth under 18. This news came as a shock to Angelica Jadunandan, who moved her family of three to New York three years ago after her transgender eight-year-old daughter expressed her identity.

New York, known as a "sanctuary state" for trans individuals, seemed like an ideal place for her family to reside. However, the situation has proven to be far from safe. With major hospitals in blue states facing closures or restrictions on providing transition-related care to teens, parents are grappling with the question of why they relocated.

Major hospital systems in New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Colorado have suspended treatment for patients under 18 due to federal threats. Mount Sinai, under the settlement, will no longer offer puberty blockers, hormone replacement therapy, or similar treatments. The hospital also set aside $2 million for a detransition clinic, as demanded by the Department of Justice.

The Department of Justice has also issued subpoenas seeking confidential patient records, causing anxiety for families already navigating a potentially hostile healthcare landscape. Despite these setbacks, some resources remain accessible. Mayor Zohran Mamdani pledged a $15 million investment in trans care, and public hospitals and Planned Parenthood clinics continue to provide necessary services.

Still, the battle for equal rights and healthcare continues, leaving many trans youth and their families in a precarious position.
