Benue Assembly sets up committee to investigate garnishee orders

The Benue State House of Assembly has formed a committee to investigate allegations of indiscriminate garnishee orders against the state government's accounts. The decision was made during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Rt Hon Alfred Emberga. The committee, consisting of five members, was given two weeks to submit its report.

Majority Leader Hon Peter Bemdoo Ipusu brought the motion on garnishee orders to the floor, highlighting the increasing number of such orders and their potential impact on the government's ability to access funds for approved programs and meet its obligations. The lawmakers expressed concern that some officials might be colluding with contractors or other parties to secure garnishee orders against government accounts, which could undermine effective governance and expose public resources to abuse.
