Bears QB Caleb Williams sounds off on explosive plays

Last season, the Chicago Bears' quarterback Caleb Williams exhibited his ability to create explosive plays both through the air and on the ground, a skill that his head coach Ben Johnson's offense was designed to capitalize on. Throughout his career, Williams has been known for his propensity to take shots, with 13 of his 27 touchdown passes last season being over 20 yards, including three that were at least 50 yards, such as the game-winning touchdown to Colston Loveland against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Even as a rookie, Williams displayed his explosive nature with seven touchdown passes of at least 30 yards. Williams stated, "Throughout my whole career I feel like I’ve been an explosive player, Ben gives me the reads and where the ball should go and if there’s a shot, take it. I’ve always been a shot taker." Despite his aggressive throwing style, Williams is also strategic, as evidenced by breaking the record for the fewest interceptions in his first 1,000 pass attempts and having only 13 interceptions in his first two NFL seasons.

The Bears are counting on Williams to maintain his explosive play while improving his completion percentage, which dipped from 58.1% in 2024 to 58.1% in 2025, a 4.4% decrease. The receivers can also help improve completion percentage by reducing drops, which were an issue last season. The Bears kick off their 2025 season against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday and aim to become back-to-back NFC North champions for the first time since 2005 and 2006.
