Bayi 13 bulan maut, ibu dan pengasuh ditahan bantu siasatan

A 13-month-old male infant died after being found unconscious in his caregiver's home in Kampung Melayu, Air Itam, here on Monday. The Chief of the East Coast Sea Police, Abdul Rozak Muhammad, said his officers received a report from the Pulau Pinang Emergency and Trauma Hospital (HPP) at 5.16 PM confirming the infant's death. Initial investigations found the victim unconscious at 2 PM being held by his caregiver, with a swollen lip.

"The victim was then taken to HPP by the caregiver and the victim's mother at 2.45 PM, but was declared dead at 3.33 PM after receiving emergency treatment," he said in a statement today. Abdul Rozak said the police detained the caregiver, a 44-year-old woman and the infant's mother for assisting the investigation. He said a post-mortem examination of the victim was carried out yesterday, but the cause of death is yet to be confirmed as they await the results of a forensic analysis, in accordance with Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001.

"The caregiver was held for seven days starting yesterday until September 15, while the victim's mother was held for three days until tomorrow for assisting the investigation," he added.
