ATM dispensed no cash, but bank ‘debited’ Rs 10,000: Kerala man wins Rs 70,000 payout

In 2014, a Kerala resident won Rs 70,000 in compensation after his account was debited Rs 10,000 from an ATM transaction, even though the machine did not dispense the cash. The Kerala consumer commission ruled in favor of the customer, finding that the bank was responsible for resolving the issue. The bank had claimed that the transaction was successful, but the commission found that the ATM's electronic records did not show the disputed transaction.

The bank had also failed to properly address the customer's grievance. The commission ruled that the bank must pay Rs 10,000 to the customer, in compensation for the amount debited from his account, along with Rs 50,000 for financial loss and inconvenience, and Rs 10,000 for litigation costs.
