In a groundbreaking move, China's media landscape is being revolutionized by a new TV series entirely generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI). The series, titled 后西游记, or "The Continuation of the Journey West," marks China's first fully AI-produced long-form television drama to air in prime time. Premiering on August 31st across Hunan Satellite TV and Mango TV, the show aims to bring the legendary tale of Sun Wukong, or the Monkey King, into the age of AI.

Sun Wukong, a character deeply embedded in Chinese folklore and popular culture, is set to take on a new role. Beyond his appearances in films, series, cartoons, and video games, this mythical figure is now spearheading a technological shift in the Chinese media industry. The AI-generated series is making waves as it dispenses with the need for human actors, animators, and the traditional set design process, marking a significant transformation in television production.

This shift towards AI in media production is driven by the growing affordability and accessibility of the technology. Lower technical barriers, enabled by AI, are enticing more producers to dip their toes into the digital waters, resulting in a substantial reduction in production and personnel costs. According to reports from the state-backed CCTV Finance, the usual production budget of about 5,000 Yuan per minute, roughly 640 Euros, has plummeted to just a few hundred Yuan. However, this economic benefit has not yet been independently verified.
