An indecent assault’: Jharkhand High Court modifies 26-year-old rape attempt conviction

The High Court of Meghalaya has revealed that 17 foreign nationals, including 15 Bangladeshi nationals, one Myanmar national, and one Nigerian, are currently imprisoned in a Meghalaya jail despite having served their sentences. A team of the court visited the Shillong District Jail and discovered that the Myanmar national had been incarcerated for more than a decade, while the Nigerian and Bangladeshi nationals had spent between six months and a few years behind bars.

All the foreigners were held in the Shillong District Jail. Upon hearing a writ petition, a Division Bench of Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh expressed concern over the situation, questioning the Additional Advocate General for presenting "completely misleading and incorrect" information regarding the prisoners' conditions via a letter dated August 28.

The court directed the Additional Advocate General to find a location for a temporary detention center for the foreign nationals, as mandated by law.
