Amnesty International Condemns Brutal Murder of Kano Journalist, Demands Probe

Amnesty International has vehemently condemned the brutal murder of Kano journalist, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, whose body was discovered at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State. According to the human rights group, Dan Shagamu was "brutally slaughtered after being overpowered by his killers." Amnesty International's statement called for an immediate investigation by Nigerian authorities to ensure that those responsible for the crime are held accountable.

A niece of the deceased, Hajiya Rabi, provided additional details to THISDAY. She stated that Dan Shagamu was killed last Monday, and his body sustained multiple cuts, including to his eyes. She added that the news of his murder was only released a day later, necessitating the breaking in of his residence to recover his body. Dan Shagamu was described by Hajiya Rabi as a fearless individual who had openly criticized those making death threats against him.

The killing took place amidst growing concerns over political violence as the 2027 elections approach. Amnesty International expressed alarm over the rising reports of politically motivated threats to life and intimidation in the run-up to the elections. The news of Dan Shagamu's murder deeply saddened the Kano State media and political circles.

Sharif Abdullahi Habib, a prominent figure in these circles, described the journalist's attack as a "very distressing situation," emphasizing that unidentified individuals broke into his home and killed him. Dan Shagamu had previously worked as a staff member at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) before becoming a prominent social media commentator on politics, security, and economic issues.

As of the latest update, the Kano State Police Command had not issued any statement regarding the murder.
