Wilson, who was a standout player for Team USA during the 2024 Olympics in France, announced on August 31st that she would not be participating in the tournament. This move sparked speculation and criticism, particularly from former ESPN personality Linda Cohen.

Cohen questioned whether Wilson's decision was influenced by the rising popularity of Caitlin Clark, suggesting that Wilson may have had some level of insecurity about being overshadowed. Hammon, however, defended Wilson, stating that she has the right to make decisions based on her health. Hammon pointed out that the same scrutiny would not be applied to male athletes making similar decisions.

She highlighted the male world championship rosters, questioning the absence of any names in those teams, to emphasize that if the same situation occurred with a male athlete, there would be no criticism.
