4 charged in probe tied to GTA break‑ins, stolen vehicles and nearly $1M in losses

Police have charged four individuals in connection with a property crime ring targeting commercial establishments, vehicles, and committing fraud across Durham Region and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Dubbed Project Magenta, the investigation revealed the group's activities between June and September 2026, involving 36 incidents of smash-and-grab break-ins, vehicle theft, attempted vehicle theft, theft from vehicles, licence-plate theft, and various fraud offenses.

The suspects frequently used stolen vehicles in crimes, including ramming them into storefronts. The investigation started following two smash-and-grab break-ins at a trading card shop in Ajax and an attempted break-in at a jewelry store in Pickering, both linked to the same group. The crimes allegedly caused over $1 million in losses to businesses, vehicle owners, and the community.

Video footage of incidents, including commercial break-ins and an attempted carjacking, was released by investigators. Four suspects were arrested during multiple search warrants in the GTA, with charges including possession of stolen property, break-and-enter, disguise with intent, mischief, attempted theft over $5,000, theft of motor vehicle, and robbery.

Police stated that organized property crime has significant financial and safety impacts on communities, and Project Magenta is still active, with further charges expected.
