Who is Suresh Gopi? Why did BJP MP and Malayalam star order all gates at Thrissur’s Paliyekkara toll plaza to be opened?
Suresh Gopi highlighted ‘legal guidelines’ after directing toll plaza operators to open all gates at Paliyekkara. According to police, the traffic cleared in half an hour after the gates were opened.
Union Minister and Malayalam film star Suresh Gopi ordered the toll gates at Paliyekkara to be opened after noticing an extensive queue of vehicles. The Paliyekkara toll plaza sits in Gopi's Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency and is situated on the Kochi-Salem National Highway. Upon seeing the traffic, Gopi himself went to the toll booth, opened all the gates in sequence, and helped clear the line within half an hour, according to police.
The BJP minister explained that while he understood the need to collect tolls, the lengthy wait time caused by idling, emissions and excessive heat was an issue. He noted there were legal directives to open the toll gates if vehicles accumulated to a certain point. Born in Alappuzha in 1958, Suresh Gopi is a well-known actor, singer and politician in the Malayalam industry, having acted in over 250 films across multiple languages.
He won the National Film Award and Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor in 1998 for his role in Kaliyattam.
