WhatsApp Effectively Ends Support For Android 5.0 And 5.1

WhatsApp has officially discontinued support for Android 5.0 and 5.1, the Lollipop operating system versions. Users of these devices can no longer utilize the messaging app. To remain functional, users must now utilize Android 6.0 Marshmallow or a higher version. This change was initially announced in April, providing users ample time to prepare for the switch.

An in-app notification was displayed to Android 5.0 and 5.1 users, alerting them to WhatsApp's impending end of support. The company suggested updating the device's operating system or acquiring a newer device to maintain usage. Affected users have several options. They can first check for a newer Android version on their device via Settings > System or Software Update.

If a newer version is not available, upgrading to a compatible device is necessary. Upgrading to a newer phone ensures continued compatibility and functionality with other applications, particularly important ones like banking. Restoring WhatsApp chats on a new device is achievable if a recent backup is available on the old device.

After installing WhatsApp on the new device, verify the phone number and restore chats when prompted. This process retrieves chat history and media from the backup, using the same phone number and Google account associated with the backup.
