West Kelowna police investigating after teen chased by person wearing Cat in the Hat costume

West Kelowna RCMP are investigating a report of a teenage girl being chased by an individual dressed as the Cat in the Hat character. The incident took place near the 2000 block of Shamrock Drive on August 24 at around 9 p.m. The girl managed to reach her home safely. Cpl. Devon Gerrits from the RCMP emphasized that chasing someone and causing them to feel threatened is a serious concern, regardless of the intent behind the action.

If the pursued person feels in danger, they could be charged with criminal harassment, along with potential offenses like assault, uttering threats, or intimidation. The RCMP advises individuals who suspect they are being followed to seek a safe, populated area, contact a trusted adult, and call 911 in case of immediate danger. This incident appears to be part of a global trend featuring a sinister version of the Cat in the Hat appearing outside homes and schools, as reported by the New York Times.

Several cases have been reported in Ireland and several U.S. states. In addition, the Caledonia Courier mentioned that the trend had reached Fort St. James, a small town in northern British Columbia.
