US summer heat shatters record

In July 2026, the United States experienced its hottest summer on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The average temperature across the contiguous US states, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, reached 74.4°F (23.6°C) during the June-to-August period, surpassing the previous record set in 1936 and 2021 by a mere 0.4°F.

This marked the fourth and fifth hottest summers on record, with human-induced climate change, primarily due to fossil fuel combustion, playing a significant role in this trend.

The month of August 2026 also set a new milestone as the warmest August since records began in 1895, with average temperatures of 75.6°F. Climate scientist Andrew Dessler of Texas A&M University noted that these record-breaking temperatures were exactly as forecasted decades ago. While the trend of breaking heat records is expected to continue, the question remains whether society will take action to mitigate climate change or continue to ignore the issue.

The record summer in 2026 was characterized by record-high daytime highs and unusually warm overnight lows, a consequence of overall global warming which allows the atmosphere to retain more moisture, preventing nights from cooling down sufficiently. Heat stress and increased energy demand for cooling were expected to rise due to the extreme heat, placing strain on infrastructure and public health systems.

Precipitation was below average for both August and the June-August period, with drought covering nearly 60% of the contiguous US by September 1. Lake Mead, America's largest reservoir, reached its lowest level on record. Severe storms also brought heavy rain, particularly in central Indiana. While Alaska and Hawaii experienced warmer-than-average temperatures during the summer months, the overall impact of the heatwave was predominantly felt in the contiguous US.
