Umno-DAP cooperation remains hard to sell to Malay voters

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan stated that the coalition between Umno and DAP in the unity government is challenging to promote among Malay voters, despite the government's economic and reform initiatives. He emphasized that issues concerning Malay interests would remain the primary focus in Malay politics, with leadership based on performance, sound policies, and government service deemed secondary factors.

Mohamad warned that failing to handle Malay issues effectively could lead to a perception of neglect towards Malays and Islam. He also noted that Umno has struggled to justify its partnership with DAP amidst the unity government, as it contradicts the views of some Malay constituents. The deputy president explained that the Malay perception of DAP's lack of support for affirmative action policies and its anti-Islam stance remains deeply rooted despite the unity government's performance.

While the government has implemented policies to boost the economy and address corruption, Mohamad stated that these accomplishments are not always viewed through the lens of Malay interests. As long as Umno is associated with DAP, the unity government may not effectively represent Malay interests, according to Mohamad.
