UK prime minister warns he will be ‘relentless’ in defense of Malvinas islanders

United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham vowed his government would be "relentless" in upholding the "right" of people living on the Malvinas Islands to maintain their British identity. Speaking during Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons, Burnham reaffirmed the UK's commitment to respecting the wishes of the Falkland Islanders to remain British, stating such an approach would remain unchanged under his administration.

His remarks came after Argentine President Javier Milei, in a televised address, claimed the Malvinas inhabitants do not possess the right to self-determination, marking the first time he had explicitly stated this position. Argentine President Javier Milei had previously expressed a preference for the islanders to "choose to be Argentine," emphasizing the importance of listening to their opinions.

The Argentine government recently filed a criminal lawsuit against five oil and gas exploration companies involved in a project off the Malvinas coast, Navitas Petroleum and British Rockhopper Exploration, alongside their investors and shareholders. Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Burnham addressed the Malvinas issue in the context of Argentina's recent actions, accusing the South American nation of acting in response to perceived "weak" decisions concerning defense and sovereignty over the Chagos Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the Indian Ocean.

Burnham suggested Argentina's aggressive stance over the Malvinas was motivated by a desire to capitalize on perceived vulnerabilities, referring to their approach as "smelling weakness."
