Trump escalates Canada trade war with import bans, federal contract restrictions

The Trump administration has intensified its trade conflict with Canada by banning specific Canadian goods from entering the U.S. market and imposing restrictions on Canadian participation in long-term federal contracts, according to the Associated Press. Starting September 29, the U.S. will prohibit the import of certain Canadian alcoholic beverages, dairy products, motorcycles, and molasses, as announced by the White House.

These restrictions are in response to Canada's retaliatory tariffs, which range from 15% to 50% and affect hundreds of U.S. products, such as steel, aluminum, cheese, appliances, clothing, cosmetics, and farm equipment. Altogether, the measures impact approximately $20 billion worth of U.S. goods, equivalent to around 6% of American exports to Canada last year.

In addition, President Trump has directed the General Services Administration to remove Canadian-origin products from its long-term government contracts, aiming to compel Canada to offer "full and fair reciprocity" for American farmers and companies. This escalation comes after U.S.-Canada negotiations broke down on August 21, with both nations hardening their stances.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that the trade dispute could cause economic hardship but vowed to resist U.S. demands, stating that Canada would "do whatever it takes for as long as it takes" to reduce its dependence on the U.S.
