The iPhone Ultra is about to kickstart a wide foldable revolution — here's why

The idea of a foldable iPhone, specifically the iPhone Ultra, has sparked a discussion on whether people need such devices. One commenter, @Knightairman1, pointed out that a foldable allows users to carry less while still having multiple devices in one. The iPhone Ultra is expected to offer a 5.4-5.5-inch cover display, similar to the now discontinued iPhone 13 mini, but with a wider aspect ratio of 3:2.

This design choice aims to provide a comfortable typing experience and more immersive social video consumption. When opened, the iPhone Ultra will feature a 7.8-inch main display with a 4:3 aspect ratio for viewing content in landscape mode and a 3:4 ratio in portrait mode for scrolling and reading. This wide screen will provide a similar viewing experience to a mini tablet or laptop without taking up additional space.

While wider phones can sometimes be awkward to use with one hand, the iPhone Ultra's design aims to strike a balance between functionality and usability. Huawei has already released a wide-passport style phone called the Pura X View, which has a 6.39-inch OLED display with a 16:9.5 aspect ratio. However, Apple is expected to lead the wide phone revolution due to its strong ecosystem, optimized iOS and apps for widescreen foldables, and the potential to capture a significant share of the market.
