The Indian wheelchair user inspiring People of Determination in Dubai

Twenty-year-old Sujith Varghese's life was flipped upside down when a bike accident left him paralyzed below the chest. Instead of focusing on what he had lost, Varghese worked tirelessly to rediscover movement and challenge his perceived limits. Today, he is a Guinness World Record holder, the first wheelchair user in the UAE to become an accredited personal trainer, and one of the Dubai Fitness Challenge's longest-standing ambassadors.

His inspiring journey began when he received an invitation from Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) to join their initiative. The Dubai Fitness Challenge, launched in 2017, aims to get people of all ages and abilities active through events like the 30x30 challenge, which encourages residents to complete 30 minutes of exercise daily for 30 days.

Varghese's involvement has been instrumental in making fitness accessible for People of Determination, with adapted activities and inclusive events. He credits Dubai's leadership for providing opportunities, support, and a platform to rebuild his life. Varghese's story is intertwined with the city's progress, and he feels privileged to live in a place that has given him so many opportunities.

One of his proudest achievements was participating in the 2022 Dubai Run, where he pushed himself to wheel an 8.71-kilometre route through Dubai, forming a wheelchair with the route itself. This moment marked the beginning of his Guinness World Record attempt, which culminated in him setting the record for the Largest GPS Drawing by an Individual in March 2023.

The record, completed in Dubai's streets with police escort, symbolizes breaking barriers and inspiring others to see People of Determination as strong and capable. As the Dubai Fitness Challenge prepares to celebrate its 10th edition, Varghese's story exemplifies the initiative's mission to make fitness accessible and inclusive for everyone.
