Thailand lays groundwork for future nuclear power

Thailand has taken steps to establish a regulatory policy framework for Small Modular Reactors (SMR) as it prepares to potentially harness nuclear power in the future. At a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Yodchanan Wongsawat, the Nuclear Energy for Peace Commission agreed that future SMR regulation should adhere to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards.

Thailand's government aims to enhance energy security and mitigate volatility from reliance on imported fuels, necessitating early preparation. The assessment of Thailand's nuclear energy infrastructure revealed readiness in ten areas, while six need improvement. Urgent attention is required for formulating a national nuclear energy policy, creating a Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation, and developing a financing plan.

The commission approved work on legislation, workforce development, radioactive waste and spent fuel management, and the domestic industrial supply chain. The Office of Atoms for Peace was tasked with expediting a Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill, while the Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Ministry will collaborate with other agencies to develop specialist courses and a workforce plan.

The Board of Investment will collaborate with OAP and research organizations on integrating Thai companies into the international SMR supply chain. No specific site or technology has been selected, as Thailand focuses on building capabilities before a future decision on nuclear power projects.
