Tamil Nadu: CM Vijay-Led Alliance Gets Formal Identity As 'Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance'

Chennai, September 9 - The Tamil Nadu political parties allied with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government have officially designated their coalition as the Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance, appointing Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay as its leader. This decision was reached at the second round of consultations among the coalition partners, convened at TVK headquarters in Panaiyur near Chennai on Wednesday.

The meeting, presided over by CM Vijay, lasted approximately 90 minutes. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam secured the majority of seats in the recent Assembly election, emerging as the largest party. While it did not achieve a majority to govern independently, it received support from several parties, including the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and the Communist parties (Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India-Marxist).

The VCK and IUML later joined the Vijay-led Ministry, whereas the Communist parties agreed to support the TVK government from outside. The process of formally structuring the TVK-led coalition began with the first consultative meeting held at a private hotel in Chennai's Kovalam on July 1, attended by representatives of the Congress, VCK, MDMK, and IUML.

Subsequent meetings were attended by senior TVK officials and ministers, with the Communist parties choosing not to participate. The formal naming of the alliance is anticipated to enhance coordination among the parties backing the TVK-led government, focusing on principles of secularism, social justice, and governance under the leadership of CM Vijay.
