Sugar Supply Set To Rise, Refiners To Release 2.5 Lakh Tonnes Of White Sugar In Domestic Market: Shree Renuka Sugars CEO

Indian sugar refiners are set to release approximately 2.5 lakh tonnes of white sugar into the domestic market, according to Shree Renuka Sugars CEO Susheel Kumar. The government is pushing for increased supplies to control prices ahead of the festival season. India currently has two standalone sugar refineries, Shree Renuka Sugars among them, which import raw sugar and refine it for export.

The government has directed these refineries to sell their ALS-refined white sugar in the domestic market to increase availability. The move has already helped lower prices, with domestic ex-mill sugar prices currently around ₹43-44 per kg, below the expected ₹50 per kg for imported sugar. The government has also allowed duty-free imports of 10 lakh tonnes of sugar to bolster domestic supplies and imposed stricter stockholding limits for bulk consumers and dealers.

Despite these measures, the government has reduced its sugar production estimate for the 2025-26 marketing year to 306 lakh tonnes, down from the previous estimate of 343 lakh tonnes. India's annual domestic sugar consumption is estimated at 280-285 lakh tonnes.
