Study Reports Major Trial Success in Lung Cancer

AstraZeneca announced on Tuesday that a major clinical trial demonstrated significant improvements in overall survival for patients with extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer when Imfinzi was combined with Amgen's targeted immunotherapy Imdelltra. The late-stage trial involved patients who had not experienced disease progression after receiving standard treatment with Imfinzi, platinum chemotherapy, and etoposide.

The study results bolster the growing importance of Imfinzi in treating small-cell lung cancer, as the drug is already approved in the US, EU, Japan, China, and other markets as a standard treatment for extensive- and limited-stage small-cell lung cancer. Susan Galbraith, AstraZeneca's Executive Vice President for Oncology Haematology R&D, stated that the findings revealed an unprecedented improvement in overall survival and solidified Imfinzi's position as the essential immunotherapy for small-cell lung cancer.

Jacob Sands, an oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, called the results among the most compelling survival data he had observed in extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer, suggesting that the combination could potentially reshape treatment outcomes. The safety and tolerability of the treatment combination remained consistent with the known profiles of the individual drugs, and no new safety concerns were identified.

Small-cell lung cancer, although comprising a small percentage of lung cancer cases, remains one of the most lethal forms of the disease, with most patients diagnosed after the cancer has already spread widely, leading to low survival rates despite recent treatment advancements.
