Specially Abled Students Protest Teacher Shortage, Poor Hostel And Basic Facilities At Govt School In Bhopal

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh: Students at the Government Higher Secondary School for the Visually Impaired protested on Wednesday, expressing concerns over a lack of teaching staff, irregular classes, and insufficient basic facilities. The school, managed by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, accommodates 190 students from Class 1 to 12, but only three teachers are assigned to instruct them.

The students, comprising both visually and hearing-impaired individuals, highlighted that classes were not held regularly and some educators spent time on their mobile phones instead of educating their pupils.

One student, Ansh Rajput, who has attended the school since 2018, lamented his lack of fundamental knowledge in mathematics and English. The students also raised issues regarding the computer laboratory, hostel accommodations, cleanliness, food quality, sports activities, and transportation. Concerns were particularly heightened for hostel residents who claimed they were barred from venturing outdoors for sports in the evenings. Additionally, the absence of separate hostel facilities for girls was pointed out by the students.

A critical issue for hearing-impaired students arose as they revealed that the teachers lack proficiency in sign language, and no interpreters are available for communication. This lack of proper support poses a significant challenge in ensuring that these students receive an adequate education and can express their grievances effectively. The students have submitted a total of 15 demands, including an independent inquiry into their 26 grievances.

Principal Mohammad Irfan took office on March 17, and he revealed that no student or parent had formally lodged a complaint before his appointment. Moreover, three teachers who were on deputation from Chhattisgarh were subsequently recalled by their respective state government, leading to a shortage of teaching staff.
