South Africa, Saudi Arabia boost tourism ties to ease pilgrim journeys [VIDEO]

South Africa and Saudi Arabia have strengthened their tourism ties, focusing on enhancing the experience of pilgrims and Umrah visitors traveling between the two nations. During a visit by Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Hajj and Umrah, Dr Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah, to South Africa on September 9, 2026, the two ministers discussed practical cooperation to ease pilgrim journeys and expand connectivity between their countries.

Minister Patricia de Lille of South Africa highlighted that the relationship goes beyond logistics, aiming to deepen tourism links through increased two-way travel, improved connectivity, and showcasing South Africa’s diverse experiences to Saudi travellers. The visit allowed Al-Rabiah to engage with South African Tourism representatives and address challenges faced by South African pilgrims, such as facilitating pilgrim journeys, supporting digital services, and coordinating with tour operators.

The two nations agreed to establish a joint working group to follow up on recommendations and boost cooperation. Additionally, they committed to encouraging airlines to increase flight frequencies to facilitate pilgrim movement and connectivity. Saudi Arabia’s pilgrimage numbers have surged, with 56,000 South Africans traveling for Umrah in 2025, up from 5,461 in 2021.

Al-Rabiah emphasized listening to South African pilgrims and Umrah visitors to improve their journey. The ministers also explored opportunities for broader tourism collaboration, including destination promotion, skills development, and promoting South Africa’s Islamic heritage and halaal tourism offerings.
