Singaporean PM’s pay to jump to S$3.6mil, will donate increase

Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is now the world's highest-paid government leader, receiving an annual salary of S$3.6 million (US$2.8 million). Wong announced that he will donate the pay increase he receives over the next five years to address the political sensitivity surrounding government salaries. All other political office holders will see a one-time salary boost of up to 9% from October 15, potentially increasing an entry-level minister's annual income to approximately S$1.2 million. The median annual income for Singapore residents is currently S$69,300.

Wong's decision to donate his salary increment reflects the need to manage public perception of government pay. The city-state has frozen political pay for the past 15 years, after public outrage over ministerial pay and growing inequality in the 2011 election. Wong's salary is higher than US President Donald Trump's US$400,000 and Swiss President Guy Parmelin's US$600,000.

The government justifies high political salaries by arguing they are necessary to attract capable individuals and reduce corruption risk. However, the pay system has been politically contentious, particularly amid economic uncertainty. Wong is still seeking to recruit private-sector talent into politics for the next election. The government's salary review process has been delayed multiple times due to economic concerns, such as the Middle East conflict.

In 2023, the cost of implementing the proposed salary increases could reach S$11.6 million annually.
