Shaheen wins Democratic primary for New Hampshire House seat left open by Pappas

Stefany Shaheen, daughter of Senator Jeanne Shaheen, emerged victorious in New Hampshire's Democratic primary for the state's 1st District on Tuesday. Despite facing criticism for potentially leveraging her family name, Shaheen managed to create a strong polling lead and secure financial backing. Nearly three-quarters of a million dollars was raised by her campaign, with 39 percent of the total funds coming from donors who had previously contributed to her mother's efforts.

Her rival, Maura Sullivan, attempted to exploit the Shaheen surname in an increasingly contentious primary, but Shaheen's campaign focused on her own public service achievements in Portsmouth and her advocacy for medical research. As the race narrowed down, two candidates, including progressive Christian Urrutia, withdrew their support, endorsing Shaheen instead.

The district, vacated by Rep. Chris Pappas who sought the Senate seat, is predicted to be fiercely competitive in the general election, with former Vice President Kamala Harris winning it by just two points in 2024.
