Rubio pushes more cooperation against drug cartels

Secretary of State Marco Rubio aims to strengthen efforts against narcoterrorism in Latin America following recent right-wing victories in the region. During his week-long trip, Rubio will engage with the new governments of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Each of these countries has expressed commitment to combating drug networks and narcoterrorism.

In Colombia, the new president made countering narcoterrorism a centerpiece of his campaign. Ecuador's president has proven instrumental in providing support to US military operations targeting drug cartels. Peru's new government will also be a key focus of Rubio's discussions.

In addition to diplomatic meetings, Rubio will address US assistance in the wake of last month's earthquake in Colombia. He will explore possibilities for deeper commercial ties between the United States and the Western Hemisphere nations.

However, Rubio's itinerary lacks a visit to Venezuela. A State Department spokesperson indicated that the visit is on the agenda for the future, describing this trip as a "condensed week" aimed at forging stronger relationships with the three Western Hemisphere countries that are expected to align more closely with the United States.
