Rhode Island's governor faces formidable primary opponent

In Rhode Island, Governor Dan McKee is facing a significant challenge from Helena Foulkes in the Democratic primary race for the governorship. Foulkes, a former executive at CVS, is seeking to unseat McKee, who narrowly won the last primary four years ago. The incumbent governor is concerned about becoming the first in any state to lose a primary since 2018.

The main issue at the center of their campaign is the bridge project in the state capital, which was closed due to safety concerns in 2023. Foulkes has been using the public's frustration over the project's cost and timeline to argue that McKee's administration is not working for most Rhode Islanders. She claims that state government is more focused on serving a powerful few rather than the general public.

In response, McKee has portrayed Foulkes as an out-of-touch elite who failed to address the opioid crisis during her time at CVS. He maintains that he has a strong record of working for the common people.

Incumbent governors in the United States rarely lose their party primaries. The last time it happened in Rhode Island was in 1994, when Democrat Bruce Sundlun was defeated by Myrth York, who ran on a reform platform. Sundlun faced numerous controversies and voter fatigue in his bid for a third term. McKee has been in office since 2021, succeeding then-Governor Gina Raimondo who moved to the position of U.S. Commerce Secretary.
