QRCS launches ophthalmology project for people in Bangladesh

In Doha, Qatar, the Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has initiated an ophthalmology project in collaboration with Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) to assist Rohingya refugees and the host community in Cox's Bazar. This initiative, part of QRCS's medical convoys programme, will conduct 15 field campaigns over a four-month period to examine patients, provide consultations and health education, distribute eyeglasses and medications at no cost, and refer those needing cataract surgery to specialized hospitals. The project will also cover 400 surgeries, transportation, medications, and post-operative care.

Mohamed Thabet Safi, Head of QRCS's mission in Bangladesh, emphasized that the project addresses a significant gap in access to specialized eye care services due to the long distances and high costs of treatment. Most of the target patients are older persons. Safi highlighted that restoring vision is not merely a medical intervention but a restoration of people's independence, dignity, and ability to fulfill their roles in family and society.

This project was launched in response to the increasing demand for eye care services in refugee camps and surrounding areas, with the World Health Organisation estimating that around 10% of camp residents suffer from vision problems, amounting to approximately 90,000 individuals in need of specialized services. The QRCS project also reflects the organization's commitment to supporting the health sector and improving access to high-quality health services for refugees and locals, particularly those most in need, in coordination with local partners and relevant health authorities.

QRCS is seeking donations from generous donors in Qatar to fund the ophthalmology medical convoy for 70 refugee and poor patients, with an estimated total cost of QR 570,500. Donations can be made through QRCS's website, app, hotlines, or collection points at malls and shopping centers.
