Qatar and Pakistan carry Trump’s message to Iran: He won't return to the MoU

Qatar and Pakistan conveyed President Donald Trump's promise not to return to the Iran-US Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to Iranian officials on August 24, 2026. The MoU, signed on June 17, 2026, aimed to end the war between Tehran and Washington and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran seeking recognition of its control over the strategic waterway.

However, the agreement faced challenges as the US reimposed economic sanctions on Iran in July, which Tehran perceived as a violation of the deal. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and General Mohsen Rezaei met with Pakistani Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, who delivered Trump's message. Qatar's involvement followed suit, with the Qatari prime minister and officials conveying the same message.

Both nations expressed Iran's unwillingness to abandon the MoU or negotiate a new text, with Oman and Qatar continuing to seek a resolution through amendments.
