Poor transport and storage systems contribute to post-harvest losses in Ghana – Mathias Yabe

Mathias Charles Yabe, a social entrepreneur and innovator, highlighted how inadequate transportation and storage systems are causing substantial post-harvest losses among farmers in Ghana. During an appearance on JoyNews' 13th edition of the Loud and Green X-Space, Mr Yabe emphasized that the transportation of perishable crops can lead to significant deterioration before reaching consumers.

He cited the case of a lettuce farmer near Dodowa Road who, after transporting the produce by lorry and trotro, often ended up with only about a quarter of her initial earnings, from GH¢1,500 to GH¢700. Mr Yabe stressed that blaming the farmer alone does not address the issue; rather, it underscores the need for improved systems to transport perishable produce.

To tackle this challenge, Agrofresh launched solar-powered refrigerated tricycles, a hybrid solution between stationary and mobile refrigeration units. These tricycles were piloted in collaboration with the Netherlands Embassy, Holland Green Tech, and Eden Tree. One pilot farmer reported zero losses when using the refrigerated tricycle.

Agrofresh's broader strategy includes building refrigeration units on farms and in communities to extend the shelf life of fresh produce, from five days to up to 21 days. This initiative is particularly crucial for farming regions with limited electricity access, making traditional refrigeration impractical.
