Poor officiating destroying Ghana football – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ghana Referees Association to enhance refereeing in Ghanaian football, stating that poor officiating is eroding the sport's appeal. The President made this appeal during a visit to the Jubilee House to meet with Nations FC and Medeama SC, who had recently secured a place in CAF inter-club competitions.

Mahama highlighted that the quality of refereeing is one of the key factors hindering the growth and competitiveness of Ghana's football. "Unfortunately, refereeing is one of the things destroying our football," he stated. He urged both the GFA and the Referees Association to work together to raise the standards of refereeing and regain the trust of supporters.

Mahama pointed out that the belief in pre-ordained outcomes has led to falling stadium attendance, as some fans have lost faith in the fairness of matches. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that every game is decided based on genuine merit. The President believes that better refereeing will make the domestic leagues more attractive, draw back audiences to the stadiums, and restore confidence in Ghanaian football.
