Policeman kills teacher wife at Thai school, kids safe

In Chonburi province, southeast of Bangkok, a police officer fatally shot his wife at her kindergarten on Wednesday. However, all the children present are reported to be safe, officials confirmed. The incident took place around 10:30 am, and police were negotiating the gunman's surrender upon returning home after the shooting. This is the latest in a series of shootings in Thailand, occurring a month after a teenager killed his grandparents, five school staff members, and a student before taking his own life.

The region has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the area, and previous attempts to tighten gun laws have not halted repeated incidents. The shooter, a local policeman, approached the school, spoke with his wife, and then proceeded to shoot her outside the classroom, where no students were present. All 44 children, along with three teachers and three other staff members, were safely evacuated from the scene.

Chonburi Governor Naris Niramaiwong stated that police are in communication with the gunman, who remains at large. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and the kindergarten has been closed pending further investigation. Psychological support will be provided to those who witnessed the incident. In 2022, an ex-policeman armed with a gun and a knife attacked a nursery in northern Thailand, killing 24 children and 12 adults, marking one of the deadliest massacres in the country's history.
