Police search for gunman after 'targeted attack' on NSW Central Coast

Police have initiated an investigation into a devastating fire that claimed the lives of 11 people, including six children, at the Bopauda market in Paniai regency, Central Papua on Monday. The fire, which erupted around 12:30 a.m., rapidly spread through the market, engulfing several shophouses and kiosks, and continued to burn for over three hours despite the efforts of firefighters.

Central Papua Police spokesperson Comr. Henry Manurung revealed that investigators from the force, comprising members of the Directorate of Special Crimes, Disaster Victim Identification team, and Forensic Laboratory team, have been deployed to Paniai to assist local authorities in collecting evidence and examining the scene of the fire. Manurung emphasized on Tuesday that the team will conduct scientific examinations to determine the cause and circumstances of the fire.

He also urged residents to refrain from speculating about the incident or spreading unverified information, stating that the investigation should be left to law enforcement authorities. "We also urged the public to avoid being provoked by rumors in order to maintain security and stability in Paniai," he added.

Paniai Police Chief Adj. Comr. Royke Betaubun announced that authorities are questioning witnesses as part of their investigation. According to preliminary witness accounts, two individuals were reportedly seen in front of a victim's house shortly before the fire broke out.
