Police launch task force to pursue sweeping organizational reforms

The Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) has established a specialized team to drive comprehensive changes to the country's police force, coinciding with the rollout of a revised criminal justice system set to commence next month. This new system will shift investigative powers from prosecutors to the police. The task force aims to transform the police's organizational culture and operational methods, incorporating input from the public and officers in the field.

Through November, the task force will conduct nationwide public hearings under the slogan "Let's listen to the people on the path of police reform," while also maintaining an online platform for public input. The KNPA assures that the feedback gathered will be promptly integrated into reform initiatives, with updates on progress and future plans expected in mid-December.

The task force consists of 15 members, divided into two groups, and is presided over by an officer holding the rank of inspector general. The revised Criminal Procedure Act, coming into force on October 2nd, removes prosecutors' authority to conduct direct investigations, such as supplementary inquiries.
