PHED Distributes Free Meters to Rivers Schools, Writes Off Debts

The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) has distributed free electricity meters to select government schools in Rivers State as part of its 2026 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The initiative took place at Government Model Secondary School, GRA, Port Harcourt and aims to enhance the learning environment while minimizing electric shock incidents and other hazards resulting from unsafe electricity use.

Mrs Olubukola Olawale, PHED's Head of Communications, discussed the program's impact and the selection process during a press conference. Olawale emphasized that PHED's commitment to social responsibility extends beyond bill collection, as the company seeks to positively affect society. The beneficiary schools were chosen based on their demonstrated dedication to preserving the provided facilities and meeting specific criteria identified through sensitisation and indices.

School authorities were further educated on meter preservation and advised against tampering with the equipment or hiring unqualified personnel. In addition to Rivers State, PHED, which operates in Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River States, will extend similar interventions to schools in the remaining states.
