Osun CSOs Raise the Alarm over Adeleke’s Vacation, Demand 48-hour Clarification on Power Transfer

The Civil Society Coalition (CSO) coalition in Osun State has raised concerns over Governor Ademola Adeleke's recent vacation, demanding clarification on who holds executive power during his absence. In a strongly worded statement, the coalition questioned whether Adeleke officially transferred his powers and duties to his deputy before embarking on his European trip for vacation and medical examinations.

According to the group, the absence of clear information could create a constitutional vacuum and uncertainty among the state's residents about the legitimate authority governing the state's affairs.

The CSO cited Section 190(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which stipulates that a governor on vacation or unable to perform duties must submit a written declaration to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly. The coalition is now urging the government to confirm whether Adeleke complied with this requirement and, if so, to disclose the date when the declaration was submitted.

If no such declaration exists, the coalition demands that the government ensure transparency by the 48-hour mark, insisting on adhering to the constitution rather than relying on assumptions or informal practices.

The coalition's stance is non-partisan, emphasizing the importance of constitutional compliance and government continuity. It also addressed the Osun State House of Assembly, urging the Speaker to enforce the constitutional process and eliminate any ambiguity regarding executive authority during Adeleke's travel. The group warned against sidelining the issue as a mere political dispute, highlighting the necessity of constitutional procedures to maintain the government's uninterrupted operation.

This move is anticipated to spark discussions throughout Osun State, especially regarding the implications of a governor's prolonged absence without formally transferring executive power.
