Onimusha: Way of the Sword Is Getting an Official Prequel Webtoon With New Chapters Every Saturday

Onimusha: Way of the Sword was released last week, and it has been hailed as an outstanding masterpiece. For those who have already played the game or are intrigued by its storyline, an official companion webtoon is available for readers with a Webtoon account. The webcomic provides a prequel to the game, and it can be accessed for free.

Set in an alternate version of Japan's feudal era, the Onimusha series presents the Edo period timeline. Way of the Sword begins over two decades after its predecessor, Dawn of Dreams. The companion webcomic, called Fated Rivalry, picks up just before the main events of Way of the Sword, focusing on Miyamoto Musashi's rival, Sasaki Ganryu. Ganryu discovers an Oni Gauntlet on his quest for power, which leads him on a path of madness and obsession.

Laurel Pursuit, a US-based studio, is responsible for producing the webcomic. They have previously distributed the Dungeon Crawler Carl graphic novel and original webcomics such as Defiance of the Fall. The Onimusha webcomic features work from Webtoon creators jjolee, hilluhri, and BAEKSSE. The first chapter was released on Saturday and has garnered over 20,000 clicks. Additional chapters will be released every Saturday, although the total length of the prequel webcomic remains unclear.

The webcomic describes the story as follows: In the world of swords, there can only be one at the top. Ganryu's goal is to become the strongest swordsman in the world. After suffering a humiliating defeat against Miyamoto Musashi, Ganryu becomes consumed by rage. This leads him on a bloody quest to reclaim his honor, which eventually sets him on a collision course with Musashi once again.

The webcomic remains faithful to events from previous games in the series, providing a seamless prologue to the latest game in Capcom's iconic samurai action series.
