OM System finally replaced the iconic Olympus PEN — and its new retro PEN camera is shockingly affordable

OM System has finally unveiled its new OM System PEN digital rangefinder, officially becoming the successor to the iconic Olympus PEN series. The new camera carries a surprisingly affordable price tag, starting at $999.99 / £849 in Australia, making it equally accessible and budget-friendly compared to other entry-level mirrorless cameras. This retro-inspired camera boasts a compact design with a plastic body, similar to a classic travel camera, while still delivering premium features and performance.

The OM System PEN features a 20.4MP micro four thirds sensor, paired with a 5-axis image stabilization system capable of compensating for up to 5.5EV of movement. The camera also includes a 20.1-point phase detection autofocus system with subject detection for people and animals, as well as a range of computational photography modes that enhance the shooting experience.

These include a Live ND mode, which allows for creative long-exposure shots, and an adjustable color profile system, offering a variety of film-inspired looks.

The camera is dust- and splash-proof, IPX1-rated, and comes equipped with a BLS-7 battery, delivering an impressive 410 shots on a single charge. USB-C charging capability further adds to the camera's travel-friendly features. The new OM System PEN kit includes the Mark III version of the 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, priced at an additional $100 / £100 to the base camera body, and both will be available for purchase starting October 1.
