NPR officer arrested after shooting man following dispute in Kitui

A National Police Reservist (NPR) officer has been arrested following the shooting death of 50-year-old John Muteti Kioko in Mitamisyi Market, Kyuso Sub-County, Kitui County. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, according to police reports. Kioko was found with a single gunshot wound to his lower abdomen, with the bullet entering through his left lower stomach and exiting through his right buttock.

Investigations revealed that the two had previously had an argument, which escalated when Kioko allegedly slapped the NPR officer and threatened to stab him with a penknife. The officer then left for his house, retrieved his officially issued G3 rifle, and returned to the market where he allegedly shot Kioko. After the shooting, the officer fled toward Ngomeni Township but was subsequently arrested by police acting on a tip-off.

At the time of his arrest, the NPR officer was allegedly in possession of the G3 rifle with a 19-round magazine for official duties and a second magazine with 20 rounds recovered from his residence in Mitamisyi. Police have processed and documented the scene, recovered one spent cartridge, and the penknife allegedly carried by the deceased.

Kioko's body was taken to the Kyuso Sub-County Level Four Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination. The police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing.
