Northwest ADC Governorship Candidates Sign Regional Compact, Pledge Joint Action on Security, Devt

Seven candidates from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Nigeria's Northwest region have signed a regional development compact. The pact aims to address concerns like insecurity, poverty, food insecurity, unemployment, and weak human development through coordinated efforts across the seven states. Formed in Sabo Mohammed Nakudu's (Jigawa), Isa Mohammed Ashiru's (Kaduna), Ibrahim Ali Amin's (Kano), Ahmad Babba Kaita's (Katsina), Abubakar Malami SAN's (Kebbi), Manir Muhammad Dan’iya's (Sokoto), and Bilyaminu Shinkafi's (Zamfara) offices, the candidates pledged to establish three committees.

These include a Central Coordination Committee, a Technical Committee, and a Media and Strategic Communications Committee. The document outlines a shared governance framework for the candidates if they win the 2027 elections, covering security, agriculture, education, healthcare, youth employment, infrastructure, trade, industrialization, and public accountability.

The pact emphasizes that many of the region's problems transcend state boundaries and necessitate collaborative solutions. The candidates point out that the security and humanitarian crisis in the Northwest has claimed over 16,000 lives and resulted in 1,583 kidnappings since January 2023. They also highlight the abandonment of agricultural land and the resulting cycles of insecurity, empty farms, hunger, and disrupted education.

Furthermore, the Compact addresses the region's economic issues, questioning the relationship between public spending and citizens' living conditions. The candidates criticize the current APC-led administrations for misusing public resources and accuse them of neglecting the region's infrastructure and security. The ADC candidates claim their Compact sets a different standard for public leadership, insisting that public resources should lead to tangible improvements in citizens' welfare.
